Welcome!
My name is Rachel, or my online alias Mrs Ginger Fox.
So firstly, why the name?
- Firstly, I’m a happily married mama, hence the Mrs. Wife since 2014, and mama since 2019.
- I’m a natural ginger/red-head (though I do get some assistance from the hairdressers with brightening this as I’ve aged and it has faded!)
- Fox is a reference to my favourite childhood stuffed toy, Foxy. When I was first diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes as a five-year-old, Foxy came with me to hospital and was also treated by my treating team as also being diagnosed with diabetes. My favourite animals are foxes and red pandas, so the fox is a homage to my childhood stuffed friend who shared the start of my diabetes story, as well as my appreciation of the animal.
I have Type 1 Diabetes, Coeliac Disease and Necrobiosis Lipoidica Diabeticorum. Also, I’m a huge nerd with a quirky fashion sense that loves 50s/60s fashion, books, D&D, video games, Japan and playing the shamisen, viola, violin and ukulele. I’m from Australia, and am grateful to live in Dharawal country.
I am undertaking a PhD part-time, aimed at improving the outcomes in the pregnancy journeys of women with pre-existing diabetes through peer support and social media/social marketing interventions. As a member of the Australasian Diabetes in Pregnancy Society and consumer representation panel member of Australian Diabetes Educators Association, I’m dedicated to the representation and advocacy for people with diabetes, by people with diabetes. I also co-host a diabetes and pregnancy consumer and peer-led podcast called MamaBetes, which has received extensive promotion from state and national Diabetes organisations.
I look forward to sharing life’s adventures with you!
Rachel (Mrs Ginger Fox)
